April 2023 The Union Chain Bridge is open again.

What an achievement! The Union Chain Bridge, linking England and Scotland over the River Tweed has re-opened after two years of painstaking restoration work, in all weathers.

It has been a massive effort by The Friends of Chain Bridge, with huge financial support by councils on both sides of the border, The National Lottery Heritage fund and the Spencer Group who completed the exacting work.

When the bridge was completed in 1820 it was the longest iron suspension bridge in the world! Built by retired naval captain Samuel Brown it cost about £7,700 to construct. It really is worth a visit, make sure you take care lining up for your drive over the bridge!

If you would like to see the bridge from a different angle Berwick Boat Trips offer a range of river and sea trips.

Chain Bridge Honey Farm is just next door if you are fascinated by bees, their wonderful products, or in need of refreshment.
